Does my phone support eSIM? Check in 10 seconds

Check your phone for eSIM support

  1. Open your phone's dialer. Use the same keypad you use to make calls.
  2. Dial *#06#. You don't need to press call. A screen with your device numbers appears.
  3. Look for EID. If you see a 32-digit EID number, your phone has an eSIM chip. If you only see IMEI numbers, it doesn't.

You can also check in settings. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for Digital SIM or EID. On Android, go to Settings > Connections (or Network & internet) > SIMs and look for Add eSIM or Download a SIM.

Your phone must be carrier-unlocked

An eSIM chip isn't enough on its own. Phones bought on a contract are sometimes locked to one carrier and refuse eSIMs from anyone else. Before you buy a travel plan, make sure your phone is unlocked.

  • iPhone: go to Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. It should say No SIM restrictions.
  • Android: go to Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network unlock (Samsung) or ask your carrier. A quick test: insert a SIM from another network and see if it connects.
  • Still locked? Ask your carrier to unlock it. Most carriers unlock phones that are fully paid off.

Regional exceptions to watch for

The same model can ship with or without eSIM depending on where it was sold. These are the cases that catch travelers out most often:

Apple iPhoneMost models sold in mainland China, and most sold in Hong Kong or MacaoDial *#06#. No EID means no eSIM.
Samsung GalaxyModels from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan; FE models before the S23 FE; some US carrier S20 and S21Check for Add eSIM under Settings > Connections > SIM manager.

How eSIM compatible phones run two lines

Most eSIM compatible phones are dual-SIM phones. They run two lines at the same time: usually your physical SIM plus one eSIM, or two eSIMs on newer iPhones and Pixels. That's what lets you keep your home number on while a travel eSIM handles the data.

LineKeeps doingSet it as
Home SIM (physical or eSIM)Your number: calls, SMS, WhatsApp, bank one-time passwordsDefault for calls and messages
LinkPaLS travel eSIMLocal mobile data in the countries on your planMobile data line while you travel

Your phone can store more eSIM profiles than it runs at once, often five or more. You can keep a travel eSIM installed after a trip and switch it off, then delete it when you no longer need it.

Older and budget phones

Phones from before 2018, and many budget models since, don't have an eSIM chip at all. No software update can add one. If your phone isn't in the list above and shows no EID, you'll need a physical travel SIM instead.

Tablets, laptops and watches

Travel eSIMs also work on tablets and laptops with a cellular eSIM. That covers iPads with Wi-Fi + Cellular and some Windows laptops with a built-in LTE modem. Smartwatches are different: their eSIMs pair with your phone's carrier plan, so a travel data eSIM won't install on an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch.

My phone isn't on the list

New eSIM compatible phones launch every month, so trust the *#06# test over any list. If you see an EID and your phone is unlocked, it will work with a LinkPaLS eSIM. Not sure? Email support@linkpals.store with your exact model and where you bought it, and we'll check before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is eSIM available on all phones?

No. Most eSIM compatible phones were made since 2018, but budget models and some regional versions don't have it. Dial *#06# and look for an EID to be sure.

Which iPhones support eSIM?

iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every newer iPhone, including the iPhone SE (2020 and 2022). Most iPhones sold in mainland China don't.

Which Samsung phones support eSIM?

Galaxy S20 and newer, the S23 FE and newer FE models, every Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, the Note20 series and selected Galaxy A models. Models from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan don't.

How many eSIMs can my phone store?

Most phones store five or more eSIM profiles. Usually two lines can be active at once, such as your home SIM and a travel eSIM.

Can I switch between eSIMs easily?

Yes. Turn lines on or off and choose your mobile data line in settings. It takes a few seconds and you don't need to restart.

Do I need a dual-SIM phone to keep my number?

Any phone with an eSIM plus a physical SIM slot, or two eSIMs, can run your home line and a travel eSIM together.
